It is the responsibility of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) to provide reliable and up-to-date information for the formulation of development plans and administrative activities of the country. The BBS has been responsible for regularly collecting, compiling and publishing various data for the use of planners, public and private research institutes, international organizations and the public engaged in the formulation of national and local plans. Recently, the National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS) and the Statistics Act 2013 have been formulated. As a result, the scope of work of BBS has expanded. In view of this, the organizational structure of BBS has been redefined and work is underway to strengthen and rationalize it. Under Section 7 of the Statistics Act 2013, surveys have been completed in various census and socio-economic and demographic fields.
The fifth census and household census of the country was held on 15-19 March 2011. This is the first time that the 2011 census data has been processed using iCADE Software and ICR machines. Using digital methods, it has been possible to give accurate results of the census in the fastest time. Under this census 05 (five) national reports, 64 (sixty four) district reports and 64 community reports have been published. Besides, 14 (fourteen) monographs and 01 (one) population projection report have been prepared using the data of Census and Census 2011.
